Equally comfortable in the concert, art song and opera repertoires, soprano Jayne Hammond is quickly making a name for herself in Western Canada. Jayne has appeared as a soloist with Pacific Opera Victoria (Kate Pinkerton, Madama Butterfly), the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (Nielsen’s Symphony No. 3 “Sinfonia Espansiva”), and the Victoria Symphony (Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream).

Praised for her “clear soprano voice” (Winnipeg Free Press), recent operatic credits include Pamina in Opera NUOVA’s Die Zauberflöte, the title role in Manitoba Underground Opera’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, Elsie Maynard in the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Winnipeg’s production of The Yeomen of the Guard, and chorus in Manitoba Opera’s Don Giovanni and Madama Butterfly. Other favourite operatic roles include Clorinda (La Cenerentola), Susanna (scenes of Le nozze di Figaro), Casilda (The Gondoliers), Contessa Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro), and Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte).

Her love of concert repertoire has resulted in performances of Handel’s Silete venti (Pacific Baroque Festival), Bach and Buxtehude’s Wachet auf! (Victoria Baroque Players), Stravinsky’s Les Noces (University of Manitoba Singers), Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate (University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra), and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2: Lobegesang (Wind Chamber Concert Series). A passionate advocate of new music, Jayne has premiered works by emerging Canadian composers including David Foley, Kristen Wachniak and Harley Dyck.

Jayne has been seen in recital across Western Canada, in programs regularly featuring Canadian composers and a wide range of repertoire. Outreach projects with Manitoba Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, Manitoba Underground Opera, and the University of Manitoba have furthered Jayne’s passion for introducing art song and opera to new audiences. Jayne is a past recipient of funding from the Manitoba Arts Council, the British Columbia Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council and the Nico Castel Scholarship Fund.

Jayne holds a MMus from the University of Manitoba and a BMus and Opera Diploma from Wilfrid Laurier University. She currently lives in Winnipeg, where she studies with Tracy Dahl and teaches at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts.
