Equally comfortable in the concert, art song and opera repertoires, soprano Jayne Hammond is quickly making a name for herself in her new home of Winnipeg. Jayne has recently appeared as a soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in Nielsen’s Symphony No. 3 “Sinfonia Espansiva”, as the title role in Manitoba Underground Opera’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, as Elsie Maynard in The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Winnipeg’s production of The Yeomen of the Guard, as a soloist in Stravinsky’s Les Noces with the University of Manitoba Singers, in the Wind Chamber Concert Series’ arrangement of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2: Lobegesang, in Manitoba Underground Opera’s Suor Angelica, in the chorus of Manitoba Opera’s Madama Butterfly, and with the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra for Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate. This May, Jayne travelled to Edmonton to make her debut at Pamina in Opera NUOVA’s production of The Arctic Flute with the generous support of the Nico Castel Scholarship Fund, the Manitoba Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council and Manitoba Opera.

Jayne is also a familiar face in her hometown, having performed as a soloist with Pacific Opera Victoria (Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly), the Victoria Symphony (soprano soloist in Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream), the Victoria Baroque Players (soprano soloist in both Bach’s and Buxtehude’s Wachet auf!) and at the Pacific Baroque Festival (Handel’s Silete venti). Her passion for art song has resulted in recitals in British Columbia, Ontario and Manitoba, all featuring Canadian composers and a wide range of repertoire. Outreach projects with Pacific Opera Victoria, Manitoba Underground Opera, and the University of Manitoba have furthered Jayne’s passion for introducing art song and opera to new audiences.

Other favourite operatic roles include Clorinda (La Cenerentola), Susanna (scenes of Le nozze di Figaro), Casilda (The Gondoliers), Contessa Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro), and Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte). Jayne holds a BMus and Opera Diploma from Wilfrid Laurier University, where she studied with mezzo-soprano Kimberly Barber, spent two years studying independently at the Victoria Conservatory of Music with Ingrid Attrot, and completed a Master of Music from the University of Manitoba under the tutelage of coloratura soprano Tracy Dahl. Jayne is a faculty member at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts, where she started teaching this fall.
